It was a bright, beautiful crystal-clear day. You could see for miles and miles above and below the water. It was the sort of day that you felt good to be alive. Iod loved these sort of days most of all. During the darker moments, when he became certain that working at the Spaceport was a waste of time and that he would never find the bastards who had destroyed Iod’s family, he kept his mind fixed on those far-off blue skies.
Days like these, he felt like maybe his family was still out there somewhere, waiting for him to come rescue them, or avenge them, or meet up with them on day, when he finally went belly up.
Iod had decided to spend such a bright and sunny day cliff-diving, since it combined two of his favourite things: falling with grace and offending a whole wackload of people. His clothes were stashed into a nearby alcove, and Iod was completely naked. There weren’t too many people around, but it wouldn’t have mattered if there were. Offending strangers was one of his favourite things to do. They were always just so easy to bait.
He walked back as far as he could go before the ever-rising rocks and dirt cut his runway short. Iod limbered up, took a deep breath, and then went running hellbent for the edge of the cliff. Just at the edge, he pushed off, and went falling into the sea. He whooped with joy as he fell down and down, the wind forcing his hair to flap this way and that. And just before he hit the ocean, he changed his bottom-half, his legs bursting open into eight brightly coloured tentacles. Iod slipped into the water like a hot knife through butter, and as he dove beneath the waves, he left a trail of air bubbles.
Iod came to a stop deep below the water. He breathed in, feeling his gills open up and flutter. There wasn’t anybody around down here. They were probably further down on the seabed, or off hunting, or doing one of a million things that didn’t require them to go anywhere near the surface. Iod enjoyed the solitude for a moment and headed topside, his lower bottom doing all the heavy lifting.
His head broke the surface of the water and he shook it, water spraying everywhere. Shore wasn’t too far away, but he didn’t head for it just yet. For now, he was content with floating and enjoying the mix of sensations, the warm ocean and cool wind.
