It’d been a very long night of relentless tossing and turning, even taking an early shower hadn’t really helped wake Magdalen up.
The day before – as soon as the crew had accounted for themselves – she’d headed straight for her room, not emerging for supper, to make conversation or even to keep updated on what was going on. She was aware Solomon had busied himself with checking every inch of the ship for recording and tracking devices that may have been installed, and that Caden had gone to retrieve the spare parts Cassandra had mentioned. However she herself wasn’t yet in the right frame of mind to be socializing. All she found she could do was lay in bed and stare blankly above while contemplating the events involving Cain, Cass and her brother.
Yesterday’s interrogation had triggered a fresh wave of memories that haunted her and the knowledge that she’d sold her brother out for a stranger’s sake weighed heavily upon her shoulders. Had it been the right thing to do? In the long run Magdalen knew she’d possibly saved Cassandra’s life, but at the expense of everyone else’s safety. Should she have simply left the girl there in the forest to face Cain’s soldiers on her own? Uncertainty and guilt flooded through her, causing the woman to sit up and bury her face in her hands.
Her intentions had been nothing but noble! And yet they seemed to have hurt more than helped. What if her own personal circumstances eventually jeopardized the Adeala? She’d never be able to forgive herself. Yet as much as she knew she should simply agree to remain on Antheia and go it alone, she couldn’t bring herself to say goodbye to the group of people she’d been so eager to get to know. That reminded her of the Denvers and her promise to return and say a proper goodbye. However that idea had been dismissed immediately by Solomon, who had forbidden her to head back to the forest.
Perhaps she’d ask him to pass on the message for her? He couldn’t refuse that could he?
Sighing heavily, the blonde collapsed back once more and laid an arm across her forehead. If this was only the first obstacle of many, how would they fare overcoming the others?
