He's so open minded you'll swear his brains just fell straight out of his head. [/size][/ul]
so the story begins...
Royce Broussard was born the youngest of four, a 'whoops' baby that came five years after what had previously been the youngest child. As such, he was constantly racing to catch up with his older siblings. His parents knew what to expect from a child of Royce's age, and when he began to outstrip all expectations, they decided to see how much he could achive. Private tutors were brought in for the three year old, and he quickly began taking on material meant for children three times his age. This hardly made him popular with his siblings, espeically when he began getting ahead of them in grades.
The young boy finished high school at age eight and was sent to the University of Terra where he began to work on two diplomas at the same time. Royce began to show some of the issues that would later destroy him: an obsession with perfection, the inability to socialize with others, and a tendency to choose the path of least resistance when dealing with people. His parents capitalized on Royce's precocious intellect and signed an agreement to star in a Network documentary about Royce's life. It lasted five seasons, and while Royce became a planet-wide celebrity, he remained isolated, making plenty of acquaintances but no friends. The show ended when Royce hit his awkward teenage phase. By then he had completed a Masters in Engineering and was working on a Masters in Architecture. When he graduated two years later, Royce began looking for work, even though he had no need for money. He had difficulty finding work at first, most people unconvinced by the fourteen year old with two PHDs, but he was finally hired by Interplanetary Designs.
Royce applied himself to creating eco-friendly self-contained systems, perfect for settling other planets with. By relying on solar energy and recycling all household waste, they could create homes with zero carbon footprint. His work was amazing, but Royce had difficulty being taken seriously, most people recognizing him from the documentary and judging him by it. He began to suspect the firm had hired him for the boost in press, and had no intention of producing any of Royce's designs, and his suspicions deepened when most of the funding for his projects dried up once he was out of the planning stage. When another colleague started producing buildings that resembled Royce's scrapped designs, he brought it up to his project manager and was told that it was simply coincidence and not to get worked up. At the same time, his parent began pushing for Royce to star in another TV show, forcing him to appear at public events and do interviews. Royce began acting erratically, shunning what little contact he had with people, ditching scheduled interviews and turning in stranger and stranger designs.
It all came to a head at at the annual Terran Architectural Awards when it was announced that one of the firm architects was about to begin building a large scale self-contained housing unit, less than a day after Royce's own designs were scrapped and taken away. Sixteen years of stress snapped Royce's brain like a twig and he took the stage, ranting and lambasting his project manager, the entire company, his parents, the TV show and society in general, then fell to the ground and wept uncontrollably. The event was being filmed and footage of Royce's breakdown when viral almost instantaneously. He was checked into a rehab centre while his parents and the film both attempted to do damage control, but it was far too late. Royce was a joke: the child-star who went crazy.
When Royce was released from Rehab six months later, he sought to be legally emancipated from his parents and was granted it. He stopped going by the name Royce and poured his life savings into one of the stranger designs he'd made during his mental breakdown, a large solar collector that resembled an umbrella. It took four years to build, the work completed by contractors in space because the design was simply too delicate to be build planet-side. During those four years, he began to experiment with drugs to calm his shattered nerves and help him relax. LSD quickly became a favourite, and by the time the Echo was completely, Blu was an entirely different person.
For the past five years, he's been living in space, travelling between the sun and a number of the planets. He sells his solar energy to space stations, principally the Underworld, and to Terra. The ship mostly runs itself, a good thing considering that Blu is usually out of his gord. He has no contact with his family and occasionally gets recognized from his public breakdown. He makes additional funds by providing passage to travellers who are looking for an experience.
role play example =
The gravity was off, and Blu was floating. He wasn't upside down, because there was no right-side up in space, but the rest of the furniture (all secured to the floor for situations like this) was on the other side of Blu, so in a way he was upside down.
It was three days since Shara left. She'd gone home to see her parents and was probably not coming back. Blu missed her on and off, mostly when he went to eat and found that dinner was not ready. That was really the saddest part. She made really good eggs.
"Hey Vivian." Blu was talking to the computer again. The Virtual Intelligence (almost like an AI, but not sentient) was pretty good company for someone like Blu. She had a nice voice, and she always talked back to him, and she rarely said no unless it was dangerous. "Vivian, I can't find the eggs."
"You finished the eggs yesterday." The computer reminded him. "You must purchase more."
"Oh." Blu looked in the fridge. "Are you sure? Did I put any in the freezer?" He did that sometimes. Food would disappear and then it would turn out he'd put it in the freezer or the cupboard when he was tripping. The freezer wasn't so bad. You could defrost most things. But in the cupboard? Well, that was a bigger problem.
"Yes Blu, I am sure." Vivian had such a pleasant voice. Blu could have listened to her for hours. Except when she was telling him things weren't going right.
"Well shit." Blu said, and shut the fridge.
