describe full personality = Sonya is very set in her ways and resists anyone trying to change them. She dislikes being a mer-person, as well as underwater life in general. Unlike most mer-people, who feel free and at home in the ocean, Sonya feels as though the water is pressing down on her, all around her, constricting her and weighing her down. She much prefers the open air and going about on legs. She is very adventurous and always dreamed of escaping what she views as the monotony of her daily life. Because she dislikes people who’s opinions are different from her, Sonya doesn’t spend much time with others. However, if she finds a rare kindred spirit, her social side presents itself. She possesses a dry wit, and the ability to make almost anyone laugh.[/size][/ul]
so the story begins...
Chapter 1: Begin at the Beginning
Sonya was a rather small child, and a slow swimmer, but that didn’t really matter, because she had other things going for her. She was very animated, funny and kind. Sonya was full of life, spirit and spunk, always at the center of things. She had two sisters, Kati who was three years older than her and Yian, seven years older. Her parents names were Jillian and Rahl. All were very kind to her, especially her sisters, who would swim extra slow so she could keep up with them and defend her fiercely if anyone dared make a comment about her size. All was well in Sonya’s world.
Chapter 2: Jealousy
A few weeks before Sonya turned six, her parents called her and her sisters together, saying they had something important to discuss. Jillian was expecting another child. The new baby was a boy, named Bafi, and from the moment he was born his parents fell in love with him. Sonya, who had always been the center of attention, was jealous of her new brother, feeling as though he had wrecked all that was well in her life. Her sisters too grew distant, tired of hearing her complain.
Sonya took to swimming alone late at night, becoming increasingly solitary as the months passed. The lively, animated girl everyone had always known retreated into herself. Feeling as though people rejected her she rejected them in turn. Through her anger at the world Sonya had made all her worst fears come true.
Chapter 3: Paul
On the day of her seventh birthday, Sonya left the house early in the morning. Anger was coursing through her, the feeling that her parents wouldn’t care if she just disappeared, they had probably even forgotten her birthday. She swam to far out however, and became tangled in a fisherman’s net. The fisherman and his son came by a few hours later, freeing the relieved mer-child.
The son, Paul, was only a year older than Sonya, and as she talked to him, she felt her heart lightening. Finally she had found someone who would listen to her, someone who understood her. After a while she developed a habit of waiting for Paul and his father everyday, memorizing the time they would arrive. Paul’s father would leave his son sitting on a rock outcropping and return to the spaceport. Later, he would come and pick up the reluctant Paul, who was still happily chatting away with Sonya. Both were fascinated by one another’s lives, and Paul could match Sonya in the one thing no one else ever could; imagination.
They spent whole days together dreaming of what life would be like when they were older. Paul would take Sonya to Terra. Then, being a great mechanic, he would construct some apparatus that allowed him the breath and withstand pressure long enough to visit Sonya’s home. After that, they’d buy a ship together. Paul would be the mechanic and captain, and Sonya (rather generously, she thought) agreed to be his first mate and cook. They’d hire people to do the other jobs if they needed them.
Chapter 4: A House Divided
By the time she was nine, Sonya was strutting around on legs with confidence and a great deal of pride. She had also picked up human slang from Paul, which only bewildered her parents more. Often, late at night, her parents would discuss these things. Jillian would say, “It’s so strange, the way she speaks, the way she’s acting, it’s like… It’s like she doesn’t even want to be a mer anymore!” She had no idea how true her words were, but Rahl reassured his wife, “ I’m sure that’s not it. She’s found a friend is all. And he makes her happy, so who are we to say what’s right and wrong for her to do?”
For a long time, the conversations always ended that way. A year passed, with only the whisper of unrest in Sonya’s household. And then suddenly, people were shouting. Yian was seventeen years old, and she wanted to leave Corus. She had recently become engaged without her parents knowledge, and when Jillian refused to allow their union, she took the simplest alternative. Yian ran away with her human fiancé Ethan.
Heartbroken and fearing that Sonya would follow in her sister’s footsteps, Jillian forbid her daughter to visit Paul any longer. But of course, that didn’t stop Sonya. The two met in secret, at night, or when Sonya was supposed to be spending time with friends she didn’t have. Rahl thought that Sonya should be allowed to see Paul if she wanted too. He felt that his children’s happiness was much more important than what he believed was important for them to do or think. This was the first real argument between Sonya’s parents.
Chapter 5: Disappearance
Jillian was already upset about Yian’s desertion, and often spoke out against the humans, angry with them for tempting her daughter away. Sonya was angry at her mother for speaking such, but said nothing about it. Kati had told her that mother was only doing this as a way to get over the fact that Yian had left. So Sonya held her tongue, until the day six months after Yian’s disappearance, when the final straw came.
Sonya awoke to find her mother screaming obscenities, shouting about the stupid, heartless, evil humans, who had tempted her daughter away and now had stolen her son. Bafi had turned up missing. From that day on Jillian would never rest in her anger against the humans. She barely let her two children out of the house. It was a hard time for Sonya, who was barely able to see Paul. Her parents fought increasingly, Rahl trying to persuade his wife that her daughters had their own lives and paths, while Jillian screamed with increasing vehemence that she would not lose all her children to the unnatural monsters who prowled these waters.
Eventually, seeing how miserable his children were, Rahl left. He offered both his daughters to come with him to his new home, where they would be free to choose the life they willed. Sonya went with him in a moment, but Kati, who prided herself on selflessness, decided to stay behind and help her mother.
Chapter 6: Farewell
Sonya was much happier with her father, free to visit Paul at last. Rahl went to see his wife once a month, but Sonya only stayed outside the house to talk to Kati. After all that had happened, she had developed a deep dislike of her mother, and said she never wanted to see her again. She spent most of her days with Paul playing at there old games once again. But of course all good things must come to an end, and two years later, Paul left Corus. Sonya was thirteen years old, and once again, she was going to be all alone. As a parting gift, Paul fashioned a water-proof padd for Sonya, so that they could still communicate. At first they spoke every day, but as the years passed they talked less and less until they finally lost contact completely.
role play example =
The night was cold and full of stars. The oceans of Corus were still, reflecting a perfect duplicate of the night sky, disturbed by barely a ripple. Into this place of silence and stillness, burst a girl. Sonya leaped clear out of the water, flipped in mid-air, and landed with a splash back in the ocean. She surfaced again, much more calmly. This time she stayed still, only her head and shoulders above the water, gazing around her in ecstasy. To her left was a rare flat rock, rather than the tall spires that usually shot from the seas of Corus. Sonya had come here for that rock, to do something that she could only do on such a rock, but she wasn’t quite ready yet.
She focused her dark gaze on the stars, her face full of longing. They were the most beautiful things she knew. Here, when she was all alone, they were so tantalizingly close, twinkling in the night as if calling to her. Her father told her that with him, she was free to choose her life, but that wasn’t true. As long as she couldn’t leave this depressing planet and her boring life, she would never be free. The stars were freedom, they were free, and someday she’d be among them. She was here so that when someday came, she would be prepared. And now she was ready.
Sonya swam toward the rock, her heart pounding in her chest. She hadn’t done this for months. What would happen? Could she still do it? Reaching her rock, Sonya placed her strong arms on it’s edge and heaved herself out of the water. For a few moments she lay there, holding her breath, watching her tail and waiting. Then, slowly, her scales began to disappear, her fins receded, and in moments, she had legs again. Her heart soared. Slowly, carefully, she sat up until she was crouched on her knees. It had been to long since she’d had knees. Slowly, carefully, she put one foot (she had feet again!) on the ground, then the other, and stood up. Sonya grinned. She was standing. With a sense of wonderment she lifted one foot, and fell to the ground. She stood again. She took a wobbly step. Then another. On the third she fell to the ground.
The night wore on as Sonya stood and fell, stood and fell, but she had once used legs with confidence, and neither her body nor her mind had forgotten that. Soon she didn’t just walk, she strode, and even attempted a wobbly run. But her most precious skill had returned. Sonya had legs, and she wasn’t afraid use them. More importantly however, she could use them. Sonya grinned, she laughed. She dropped to her knees and raised her arms to the sky, her joyous shouts of laughter filling the once still night air.
